Den Helder Quay Wall
Design of a new steel-and-concrete quay wall to replace structures failing from microbiologically influenced corrosion.
At the Port of Den Helder, rapidly accelerating Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) had degraded the quay walls to the point where the deteriorating sheet piling could no longer guarantee a safe structure.
The task was to calculate and design a new steel-and-concrete structure to serve as a quay wall, one that also protects the steel against further MIC.
